Visual Research Department is an independent documentary practice operating at the intersection of sport, science and human achievement. VRD provides an observational presence in the field, documenting the people, processes and ideas that might otherwise remain unseen.

Studies in human achievement

The work is built slowly, often over months or years, by returning to the same people, places and questions. Rather than arriving at the culmination of achievement, VRD is interested in everything that enables it: the repetition, systems, environments, relationships, small setbacks and small decisions.

Each project begins as a study. Some studies become films, books, exhibitions or printed matter. Others remain open, evolving as more material is collected.

VRD is an ongoing observational study into human achievement.
